Those who know me know I love books, especially kids’ books, and I enjoy telling people about my favorites. I plan to occasionally share about books that are relevant For the Girls.

You Are the Best Medicine

Written by Julie Aigner Clark

Illustrated by Jana Christy

2010

This book, with its blurred pastel colors, celebrates the relationship between a mom with cancer and her very young daughter. The mom gently lets the girl know what they will likely be experiencing in the near future, while comparing it to their shared experiences of the not-so-distant past.

The world that the reader sees contains just the two of them, with the exception of three guests at a birthday party. This could be attributed to the limited scope of the little girl’s world, which mostly revolves around her and her mom. It could also be seen as the mom saying “This topic is so important that I want you to look straight into my eyes and listen to what I’m saying so you will remember it always.”

Even though the mom admits she will be sad and scared and sick, remembering their shared good times in the past and anticipating similar experiences together in the future gives her hope. It is a comfy, cozy sphere that the two of them inhabit, overflowing with love.
