An Encouraging Word
Words are important. The words we speak can have a lasting effect on those around us.
As kids we chanted: “Sticks and stones can break my bones but names can never hurt me!” That is true if you have to emotional armor to ward off verbal attacks, but not many of us are so well equipped. How many have been affected for years by believing they were stupid or ugly because someone cruelly told them they were?
Fortunately, words can also be used for good. A recent episode of the podcast “My Unsung Hero” relates the story of a woman, bald due to chemotherapy, who was discouraged and self conscious about people staring at her. An x-ray technician told her, “They are staring at you because you’re beautiful.” His words have remained with her to this day.
A kind word can help move us forward. Visualize how the tiniest obstacle can keep a wheeled cart from moving forward or even cause it to stop. A little extra push can help it proceed again along its way; encouragement can give us that extra emotional push.
In navigating life, there are plenty of times when we could use that boost. Those who have negotiated their way through Cancerland may be more keenly aware of the difference just a few words can make. Hopefully this equips us to encourage others with the encouragement we ourselves have received. Like planting seeds, we don’t always know when our words will take root. We continue to liberally share, trusting they will land just where they are needed.
Dear readers, feel free to share in the comments below how a simple word of encouragement made a difference to you.
