Making a Difference: Wildfire Magazine

As many of you know, dear readers, I recently had my poem Ink published in Wildfire Magazine. As exciting as that was for me, the icing on the cake was getting to interact with the editors and other writers through their Instagram Live event. They also hosted a Storytelling event where many of the writers read their own work aloud. What a powerful time as women who had been through so much shared their stories as an encouragement to others. How did this come to be?

Wildfire founder and editor-in-chief April Stearns was 35 years old when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She sought out other women who were dealing with cancer at a young age. In satisfying her own need for support, she eventually ended up creating a magazine and writing community for women who were “too young” for breast cancer. Wildfire’s workshops encourage women to tell their stories and to hopefully encounter some measure of healing through writing. Their weekly podcast “The Burn” goes deeper with interviews with the magazine’s contributing writers.

Many thanks, April, for taking the challenges of your own life and building a safe place for women to thrive through a breast cancer diagnosis. Thank you for the difference you are making in so many lives!
