Challenge

It is National Poetry Month and I’ve joined a challenge to write a poem each day for thirty days. Participants are given a prompt, and sometimes a style to follow. It has been fun, difficult at times, but definitely rewarding. It’s not that I didn’t think I could do it - it just never occurred to me to even try!

I’m not ready to share any of the poems from the challenge with you yet. They are only first drafts and some aren’t a good fit for Blog For the Girls. It has been interesting to see what I’ve been able to accomplish in the past few weeks. Do we realize we are capable of doing so much more than we suppose? Two years ago I didn’t consider myself a writer. Now I’m joining poetry challenges? Who is this girl?

To call myself a poet can feel like a bit of a stretch. Sure, I’ve always dabbled in writing parodies, such as “The Girl with Lymphedema,” and Seuss-type rhymes, such as “Ode to Current Screening Technology.” When I hear the word “poetry”, I think of deep, serious stuff, or imaginative, flowing language. Participating in the challenge has not only made me look at poetry differently, but also caused me to try new styles and formats I haven’t used in the past.

Dear reader, is there something new you are exploring in your life, a new art form or a new hobby? How’s it going for you? Is it anything like you thought it would be? Feel free to tell us about it in the comments below.
