Those who know me know I love books, especially kids’ books, and I enjoy telling people about my favorites. I plan to occasionally share about books that are relevant For the Girls.

Punk Wig

Written by Lori Ries

Illustrated by Erin Eitter Kono

2008

Today’s choice is a picture book portraying a family - mom, dad, and young son - and the mom has cancer. This book was published after my first journey with cancer, so I did not have the opportunity to read it to my children, but I think they would have enjoyed it.

The story is told from the perspective of the young son who refers to the cancer as “alien blobs.” Dad is there as a supporting cast member, but this book focuses on the relationship between the mom and son. It is sweet how he helps take care of his mom by bringing her peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and letting her use his special cup from when he was little.

The mom has told the son that the “zapping medicine” will make her hair fall out. When the time comes, the two of them go together to get her wig. After some fun in the wig shop, they settle on one which gives mom a chance to take on a new persona. I had to smile at the scene when the mom goes to the grocery store outfitted to match her wig.

Eventually, the mom’s hair grows back. What happens to the wig? No spoilers here folks!

One of the dedications at the beginning of the book is for “…everyone who inspires laughter in adversity.” The author and illustrator both accomplished that.
